Did you use 54w T5's? Was given a single T5 54w controller and the tube literally just fits into the hood? Seems strange, the end caps are touching the glass each side of the tank

can either use 2 of these which will work out cheaper

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OSRAM-1-x-54w-...item335903969a

or one of these

I have just realised, the tank you converted the T5's lights on, was it the rio 240 or bigger? I have a rio 240 and a standard 54w T5 doesnt fit into the tank length ways with end caps on, its more or less exactly the same length, i can get it in by squeezing it in but it might bow the tube slightly

Anyone else tried this recently?

I'm in the process of doing it and I can't part the bottom of the ballast unit from the top, mine doesn't appear to be siliconed together more like solvent weld of some kind

Intead of puting the T5 ballast in the old T8 place.
Could you just wire it up as normal and have it sitting under the tank in the stand as you would a normal light ballast ?
I know they won`t be waterproof but i on`t have a sump,so the cabinet would be bone dry

Like the idea of DIY light unit but not to sure of butchering the hood.

Cheers Spike
