DIY LED array controller

Hi All

Because of the amount of interest there has been in the DIY controller from my 48" array build I thought it was worth starting a thread specifically for the controller so all the information and feedback/questions are easy to find in one place instead of scattered through the array build thread and various other threads.

For anyone that doesnt already know... I built an LED array for my 48" reef tank (link in sig) and was lucky enough to have help (thanks Hugh) in putting together a controller that enables sunrise-sunset simulation and temp monitoring etc. My array uses buckpucks to drive the LEDs so the controller has not been tested with Meanwell drivers yet although I am aware of at least a couple of people who will be testing this shortly.

The controller is based on an arduino and off the shelf LCD display with only a few other components. Because of this, it is simple to construct and it has also been fully documented to make it even easier. It only costs around 50 in parts (including the arduino).

Before reading any further, please understand that I accept no responsibility for any loss, damage or injury caused by the use of this information. It is just the documented account of the way the controller was put together and its functionality. If you decide to use the documentation to build your own controller, you do so at your own risk. Now thats out of the way......

Photos

Photo of the controller assembled.

Photo of controller unassembled. Arduino on left, LCD shield on right and the protoshield in the centre which is the only part that needs assembly/soldering. These just stack together.

Hi All,

I am Hugh and have been helping Dave with the Arduino build.

I just thought that I would introduce myself as I have only just signed up for an account.

I don't know much about fish but I like looking at them

Cheers

I see another quality thread coming up . Bookmarked. Are you considering using the Arduino for any other control?

nope. I like to keep things nice and simple with my reef so its just for the lighting.

Dave, Firstly thank you very much for starting such a great thread and I really hope people would take fully advantage.

Hugh, can't believe Dave made you join fishy stuff lol and a very warm welcome to our lovely fishy community...........

We hope to see your great input on this complex topic and hopefully you will be converted to a reef geek.

Me too. Hugh has put a lot of work into this so it seemed a shame not to share.
