Tangaroa's Tank - It Takes 45 Cubic Feet to Tango

Hi

Welcome to my tank thread.

Current FTS as at 20th March 2013

If you've been directed here from this thread then, well, you know what to expect really.

If not then hello and welcome to my latest reefing adventure.

Ok, let's get started shall we?

What's wet, wild and got 45 cubic feet? No it's not the British Paralympic Syncronized Swimming Team.......It's my new tank.
If you're offended by that then I suggest you find another thread.

My name is Andy, full time Reefer and part time George Clooney look-a-likey.

This is my 3rd Reef tank. My first venture into marines was a sumpless Maidenhead Aquatics Oak Tank. It was a lovely piece of furniture, but without the sump was pretty useless as a marine aquarium.

Others more gifted than I would have been able to convert this tank into a sumped system (in fact the new owner did just that) and been very happy with it but alas I didn’t have the wherewithal to accomplish such a feat.

So I flogged it and bought this, a Seabray 6x2x2

Unfortunately, I seem to have developed a bit of a fetish for Tangs.

Everybody loves a good tang, don’t they?

Anyway, the problem with tangs is that they like a lot of swimming space and they like to eat. In fact, the only things tangs prefer to do more than swimming and eating is pooing.....Lots of pooing.

My current roll call of tangs includes

Pictures and Details to follow.
Achilles Tang (Acanthurus Achilles)
Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens)
Black Tang (Zebrasoma rostratum)
Blonde Lipstick (Naso elagans)
Gem Tang (Zebrasoma Gemmatum)

So I decided that they could do with a little more space.

Another reason I decided to upgrade at this time was that I had run out of space for my sand dwelling lps collection.

Still don't believe me? OK, I upgraded now because I saw a cheap tank in the classifieds section and couldn't resist a bargain. Right, satisfied?

It is a seabray single weir tank measuring 96 inches long x 30 front to back x 27 top to bottom.

The front panel and both sides are optiwhite glass.

So after deciding I was going to buy it, and then deciding that I wasn't going to buy it, I changed my mind and decided to buy it again. I had more flip-flops than the mothers race at the schools sports day....BTW, why don't they ever wear sports bras? They spend months preparing for the big day going to zumba classes and boxercise, ready to battle against the other mothers to establish the physiological and sociological supremecy in the playground so that Chantelle can be proud of her mummy, but yet they still end up looking like sweaty pandas with 2 black eyes at the end of the race? Anyway I digress......

After agreeing to buy the tank I had to make arrangements to collect the behemoth from Kent, a mere 220 miles away. It was going to take 3 weeks before I could collect.

Cue 3 weeks of planning, meticulously mapping out every aspect of the build in a way befitting its status in the supreme supersize category......

I wrote to Scoob and asked him to come over every 3 days to prepare a fantasticly detailed and witty diary of the planning and tank build stage......

Unfortunately he told me to F' Off, so there are no photos, no witty repartee, no comical light fitting, just a couple of photos of the tank already in the house.

Darn it...I said I wanted a blue background

See that door behind? There be secrets behind that there door......

What's that love? I should have scraped the tank whilst it was outside?

30 minutes later.....

A whole litre of Ronseal "One Coat" tile paint later........

If anybody from B&Q ever tells you that any paint is truely "one coat" feel free to punch them in the face and tell them "That's from Tangaroa!"

I'll post up my plans for the sump room and equipment list over the next few days.

As always,

for looking.

" Cheap tank " that's a perfectly good excuse for an upgrade you can't let these bargains get away .

So what is 45 cubic in simple terms ?

Is the new tank going in a new location or where the old one is ?

Hi Paul
The display tank holds 1275 litres before displacement.

It's currently sat in the same room as the old one but will go against the other wall to allow for easy connection to the sump room. The old tank will be put up for sale shortly.
