Grimson's Fit Filtration 4x2x2 w/ DIY Cabinet

Finally going to upgrade our very old sumpless marine tank!

Almost a year of reading up on how things have changed and looking at what to buy I have started collecting things for the new system.

The tank will be located in place of the current tank in an old fireplace that dates back 400 odd years in the middle of our house. The bricks are sealed and the chimney has been blocked off to hang the lights in.

Access is a pain but I have long arms and make do!

After lots of reading I decided to go with Paul at Fit Filtration for the tank and sump then build my own Cabinet.

Here is the plan.

System Spec:

Tank and Sump
  • Fit Filtration Aquarium clear glass, polished beveled edges, black silicone built in base. 48x24x24
  • Weir box in glass finished in black acrylic with laser cut removable weir comb 3 holes for exit and return pipe work, Anti-flood water tight design. Pipe work and holes drilled to clear 40mm box section steel frame.
  • F-type flow system complete exit pipe system for water flow up to 10,000 litres an hour.
  • Return pipe through weir box 20m
  • Vinyl waterproof backing for back panel of tank. PLUS Both sides
  • Fit Filtration Filter Sock holder 7" w/ 100 Micron Sock
  • Sump 40Lx16Hx18W w/ Three Main Sections + Top Up Section
  • Sicce Syncra 4.0 Return Pump

Cabinet and Frame
  • 40x40x3mm Mild Steel Box Section Frame
  • Clad in 18mm and 12mm Marine Plywood
  • Painted with Matt Black Marine Paint

Lighting
  • 2x EcoTech Marine Radion XR30w
  • 2x EcoTech Marine Radion Hanging Kits

Flow and Filtration
  • 2x EcoTech Marine Vortech MP40wES
  • ATI PowerCone 200i

Heating
  • STC-1000
  • 2x Aqua Medic 300w Titanium Heaters

Dosing and Top Up
  • Kamoer 3 channel Dosing Pump
  • TUNZE Osmolator

I started off playing with Google Sketch where I accidently drew a 5ft Tank but manually changed the measurements to 4ft as I didn't want to start again.

Pretty sure the sump baffles are all wrong but this is just to give me a rough idea of what I want it to look like!

I know there will be very limited space under the tank but I wanted to max out the system volume and I have space next to the tank to build another cabinet to house more things in.

Feedback good and bad is very much welcomed!

I will update with more pictures as progress is made!

Was outside making a start on the wood for the cabinet

and the UPS man tapped me on the shoulder with a box of exciting stuff!

Just plugged them in and updated the Firmware (new out today!) look amazing but not hanging until the current tank is moved.

Also some picture through from Paul at Fit Filtration!

Some more pictures from Paul!

Glass Weir going in.

On Paul's advice we have opted to remove the Refugium/DSB section to allow more space for the skimmer, filter sock and go for some reactors instead!

The Top Up Section is around 38L.

Going to try and get some work done on my Cabinet over the weekend!

Decided to put my STC-1000 together last night.
  • STC-1000 13
  • Junction Box Black 100x100x40mm 4
  • M20 Glands 1.50 ea
  • 2 Gang Rubber Extension Lead 5
  • Total 25

Made myself a wiring diagram and got it checked the other day in another thread.

Started by marking out and then Dremeling the holes.

STC Slides in nice!

Cut the extension lead in half and wire in as per diagram.

Jobs a good'un!

No plans to run any cooling as low ambient temperature in tank location and LED lighting (Current tank is fine with MH) but can always add at a later date if I need it.

Got my frame finished today in matt black with holes drilled and tapped ready for mounting the panels.

Most of the panels are primed and painted, still need to sand down and get a good finish but really pleased with the coverage of the matt paint!
